Last Sunday there was an earthquake.

Last Sunday I phoned my sister, Nona Jean, she had some important news. She said just before Sacrament Meeting closed, the Bishop got up and told everyone that ten minutes from the close of the meeting, there would be an earthquake. It is a pretend earthquake but he charged everyone to act as if it had been a real event. He said that they would have to give up the hot dogs and fried potatoes for Sunday dinner because there would be no electricity and the gas lines would be cut. He suggested a cold sandwich. He directed all the Priesthood, who had a calling as a Home Teacher, to go out and check on their families and report back to him at five o'clock at a central meeting place in the neighborhood, that same day. The roads would be dangerous with debris so they can't use their cars.

He explained that next Sunday morning, he would call on people at random in the congregation during Sacrament Meeting, to give a report of their personal experience in the aftermath of the earthquake. He suggested that as they left the building, to pick up a sheet of instructions that would help them in this time of need.  Nona said it had guidelines about turning off this and that in the house, and other safety measures.

Also, the Bishop stated that the earthquake crisis would end at 7 p.m. that night. The electricity would come back on and the danger would have passed.

Nona said to me, she was amazed that she answered her phone, because, actually, it didn't work. :-)

She also said, and I had to chuckle, that Jerry got the generator out of the motor home and hooked it up so he was watching t.v. in his den. He had also, gotten out the tractor, driven to a part of the neighborhood where he could collect run off water from a drain pipe, in the bucket on the front of the tractor. Then he drove to his neighbor's homes to give them water, so they could flush their toilets. (In pretend) I hope the Bishop calls on Jer next Sunday. ;-) For real.

That is amazing! I've never heard of that activity before...you'll have to give a report of what happens.

sounds like what i'm already doing - hardly ever driving, eating cold sandwiches, not answering the phone. . .
