Update on the Earthquake in my Sister's Ward.

Death toll is zero.
 Injured is zero.
(good thing!)

This is the report Nona gave to me, of the problems they encountered.

The First Counselor talked about his storage at his house, the Bishop was next and talked about how many families were affected, the ratio of reports and a few personal notes.

Several reports came from the members, adding unexpected things, and they all made notes mentally or on paper.  Most everyone, including Nona and her husband, Jer,  had not set clothes aside for the emergency.  It was noted that the clothing, would need to be updated from time to time with the seasons and with sizes.

Several said that they could not get into their houses because they use the garage code, but without electricity the garage didn't work.  The Bishop said that he had the same problem and was getting keys for the house made next week.

Water was the number one problem.  Some had the big blue barrel for water but it was empty.  Their next door neighbor had his empty blue barrel in his garage and could not get to it, even if it had water, because of no electricity.

And then there is the problem of cash.  You can't access your money in an emergency like this, so you have to have some on hand.  They were told $300.00 and some in change.  If you find yourself dipping into the piggy bank, remember to replace the same amount without delay.  Don't forget where you put it.

That was the extent of what Nona reported to me about the experience at church, the following Sunday in Sacrament meeting.  I think, if we gave it some good thought, we could each come up with more suggestions.  And because April is Earthquake Awareness month, I think we will be able to read in the newspaper, and hear from other sources, more ideas.

Please let us know your thoughts in emails or on your blogs.  We are all going to have to be MORE PREPARED.

Something I though of...diapers for babies. In a true emergency I wouldn't want to carry around a huge pack of disposables & then run out. We're investing in a washable diaper set that adjusts to fit any size baby - this will be in our emergency packs until all our babies are out of diapers.

Hooray for Barbara. Include a little clothes line with it.

Good thinking. We use to make our own out of flannel. You could pattern after one of the originals if you wear out the diapers before you run out of babies. :-)
